The Kensington Haunted Mansion

I'm about to introduce you to a wonderful place. It's in my home province in a small town named Kensington. And, when people visit PEI, I force them to go there. I have trouble describing it to people. It's really something you need to experience yourself. However, seeing that you are reading this on the internet, you are likely not in PEI and likely cannot go, so I will do my best.

This...

Is the Haunted Mansion.
graveyard
It looks really beautiful from the outside, but inside you'll find a lovingly crafted, yet incredibly corny haunted house.

There are several animatronics from the 80s that were recycled from the Haunted Mansion's owner's parent's old theme park, Rainbow Valley.

I wish I had a picture, but one of the animatronics is sitting on a toilet and making fart noises. The place has a bit of a tone problem.

lizzy borden
I think my favourite animatronic here is the Lizzy Borden one who flies above your head swinging her axe. She has a shrill recorded voice that says "I'm Lizzie Borden!" just in case you were confused.

Now, the last floor you explore in the Haunted Mansion is where the tone problem really shines. This place used to host several castle miniatures and a Victorian style garden before the current owners bought it. And in the basement of the building, they built a miniature "London Town" to explore. Instead of changing ANY of this themeing, the current owners simply installed black lights and threw some skeletons and cobwebs up. It's incredibly corny and funny.

Finally, when you exit the building, you are brought into the gardens, which also have a bit of an identity crisis going on.

There are some lovely flower beds and waterfalls...but then there are still some "haunted" decor, like coffins, skeleton buggy drivers, and an animatronic beast that barks at you. And then there are the other rainbow valley leftovers: the Hillbilly shootout, the various animal sculptures, a petting zoo, a tilt-a-whirl, and arcade games. Oh, and I can't forget the Love Chair, which for only a quarter will tell you what kind of lover you are!

Here is my cousin Jamie and her boyfriend Billy who I forced to come here.

It is a bizarre little place, but I adore it. Everyone I've taken has thankfully seen the charm of the place and enjoyed themselves immensely.

If you ever come to PEI, tell me, and I will take vacation leave, drive the several hours long drive home, and take you.

day out with my aunties

Inside of Maud Lewis House

My mom and my aunts came to visit this fall. All of them are big fans of the movie "Maudie" so I took them to the AGNS to see her preserved home. It's really inspiring as an artist. We're hoping to buy a home in this coming year, and I want to be really creative with how we decorate and really make it our own.

There's no real reason you can't do whatever you want with the walls of your home. I think it's a shame more people don't just paint them however they like.

We also went to some antique stores and the public gardens.

I find that it's not until I have guests visiting me do I realize what a wonderful place I live in. This past year, I've holed myself up at home a lot to cope with dad's death and everything else that happened around it. In 2023, I really hope to get out more and try to enjoy the delights of my country.

Lunenburg

Mahone Bay Churches

We also spent a day in Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. I have never been to Lunenburg despite spending a total of 7 years in this province, which is a little embarrassing. We were lucky -- we showed up on the day of the last voyage of the Bluenose II.

Scarecrows
Scarecrows

Mahone Bay was having a scarecrow festival while we were there. To be honest, a lot of the scarecrows were super creepy, and not in an intentional way. The faces were overpainted to be realistic, but they still had lumpy scarecrow bodies. It took things into the uncanny valley.

The Rosie Riveter was especially creepy. What is up with those hands?

It gave off the same vibe as Andy's Dummies, another local treasure/horror show. Sadly, Andy died a few years back and the Dummy Farm has closed. If you've never heard of it before, check it out: https://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread.asp?fid=1&threadid=128568&currpage=1&pp#post5

I wore my new dress from Foxgloves. I think the cut is really cute, but I feel like it's verging into vintage fashion moreso than lolita.
